"An Overview of the Pharmaceutical Industry"
Douglas Long,
Vice President of Industrial Relations, IMS Health, Totowa, NJ

The U.S. pharmaceutical industry remains the largest and, potentially, the most attractive geographical market in the world, with sales of over $250 billion. Growth remains strong, but is no longer measured in double digits. What now are the trends, issues and outlook?

This year may be a pivotal one following 2005’s unprecedented change (ranging from cost-containment measures to cross-border importations to heightened safety issues) and the continued moderation of overall growth rates worldwide. There are a number of important questions: Will sources of growth from industry innovation be enough? And, are these efforts being directed to significant areas of unmet or growing needs?

Answers to these and other key questions, plus evaluations of biotechnology, generics, blockbusters, new products, distribution channels and the pharmaceutical model, among other factors, will highlight the CM&E's September 7th meeting, when Doug Long, Vice President of Industrial Relations for market leader IMS Health, presents his outlook for the pharmaceutical industry.
